As tenure track professorships in universities have become few and far between in the current economy, Ph.D. candidates are opting for less traditional job opportunities. UC Berkeley organized and hosted the first non-academic career conference in March, 2013. An online career survey among Berkeley’s graduate students showed that many are interested in information about jobs in technology, consulting, K-12 teaching, think tanks, research, non-profits, and other non-academic workplaces. The conference organizers were quick to point out that they’re not advocating that graduate students desert academia. They want people to see what other choices are available to them.
